What File To Upload

KDP accepts DOCX, EPUB 3, KPF (Kindle Create’s native package), and HTML. EPUB 3 is the right answer for reflowable fiction and most non-fiction — your CSS survives, the table of contents stays clickable, and the same file works on D2D, Apple Books, and Kobo without a re-export. KPF is for fixed-layout illustrated books, comics, and children’s picture books. DOCX should be a fallback only — KDP’s DOCX-to-Kindle converter introduces style-collision bugs that don’t surface until a reader returns the book.

Look-Inside & Sample

Amazon’s Look-Inside crops the first 10% of the book — the part Amazon shows shoppers before they buy and the part that drives the conversion. If your front matter is a copyright page, dedication, foreword, acknowledgments, and a long preface, the sample ends before chapter 1. We trim and reorder front matter so the sample lands on a hook, not a list of who you’d like to thank.

Categories & Keywords

KDP gives you 2 categories at upload and 7 backend keywords. The categories at the upload form are a small subset; you can request 8 more (10 total) by emailing KDP support after publication. The keywords don’t display anywhere — they only widen the queries Amazon ranks you for. We pick categories that have low absolute sales-rank thresholds for #1 (so the launch can hit best-seller flags) and keywords that match real-buyer search phrasing rather than the topical labels authors gravitate toward.

Pricing & Royalty Tiers

KDP pays 70% royalty on ebooks priced $2.99–$9.99, 35% on everything else. Outside the 70% band, Amazon also charges a per-MB delivery fee on every download, which makes a 50 MB illustrated children’s book at 35% royalty net less than a 1 MB novel at 70%. Set the right price for the right tier — and pick the same price across all 13 KDP storefronts unless you have a reason to localize.

After You Hit Publish

Amazon takes 24–72 hours to push the book live. We verify it appears on the right product detail page, that the Look-Inside renders correctly on desktop and Kindle apps, that X-Ray and Page Flip enabled (both require a real EPUB nav doc), and that no review-flagging metadata fields tripped during ingestion.
