What Amazon Kindle Formatting Means Inside KDP
Amazon Kindle formatting is the file preparation that survives KDP’s ingestion converter and renders correctly across KFX devices, Fire tablets, and the Kindle apps—every one of which applies its own CSS subset and font-substitution layer. KDP accepts DOCX, EPUB 3, and KPF (Kindle Create’s native package), but the Previewer will flag embedded fonts under 11pt, images below 96 dpi, and any fixed-layout file that ships without a manifest entry for the cover.
KDP File Path Tradeoffs
EPUB 3 wins for reflowable fiction and most non-fiction because it preserves your CSS and lets the conversion stay deterministic. KPF (Kindle Create) is the safer route for illustrated children’s books, comics, and titles needing fixed-layout pages, but it locks you into Amazon’s template grid and removes the option to push the same file to D2D or IngramSpark later. DOCX is the slowest path and the one most likely to surface auto-converted style collisions.
What Look-Inside & Categories Demand
Amazon’s Look-Inside crops the first 10% of the book, which means front-matter bloat—copyright, dedication, acknowledgments—eats the sample that drives the buy decision. KDP categories and the seven backend keywords don’t change formatting, but X-Ray, Page Flip, and Enhanced Typesetting all require a properly structured NCX or EPUB nav doc; a flat HTML table of contents alone disables them.
