IngramSpark Print-on-Demand — What Actually Gets Printed

IngramSpark book printing runs on Lightning Source, Ingram’s industrial print-on-demand operation that has printed self-published trade paperbacks since 1997. Every order is printed when it’s ordered — whether by a reader on Barnes&Noble.com, a librarian at the public library, or a bookstore restocking a single copy. There’s no print run, no warehouse minimum, no risk on inventory you don’t own.

Trim Sizes & Paper Stock

IngramSpark prints trade paperback in 33 trim sizes, including all KDP standards (5×8, 5.25×8, 5.5×8.5, 6×9) plus oversized formats KDP doesn’t support (7×10, 8.5×11 for workbooks, 8.5×8.5 for cookbooks). Standard interior paper is 50# white or 50# crème for fiction and most non-fiction; 70# white is the default for color interiors and is the right stock for cookbooks, photo books, and children’s picture books. Premium color (70# bright white, higher line-screen) is the upgrade most illustrated books need to look like a trade-published title.

Hardcover Options

IngramSpark prints hardcover in three bindings: case-laminate (printed cover bonded directly to the boards, no dust jacket — common for textbooks and self-help), cloth hardcover with printed dust jacket (the trade-fiction default), and cloth hardcover with foil-stamped spine. KDP only does case-laminate, which is why authors who want their hardcover to feel like a Penguin Random House release publish it through IngramSpark.

Spine Width & Cover Math

Spine width is calculated from page count × paper weight (0.0032″ per page on 50# white, 0.0025″ on 50# crème). Get it wrong by 0.05″ and the spine art shifts — your title slides onto the back cover. We compute it from your final page count and trim, build a press-ready PDF cover with the right bleed (0.125″ all around) and the spine guidelines IngramSpark expects, and submit a proof copy before enabling distribution.

Returns & Discount

The wholesale discount you set determines who can stock you. 40% is the floor — required for distribution; bookstores will skip it. 55% with returns enabled is the real number for getting onto Barnes & Noble shelves and into library acquisitions databases. Returns means Ingram allows the bookseller to send unsold copies back at your expense (deducted from royalties), which is the cost of being in the trade catalog at all. We model the per-unit royalty at 40% non-returnable vs 55% returnable on your specific page count and list price before you commit.
