• Scene — Goal + Conflict + Disaster. The protagonist enters with a clear want, runs into opposition, and leaves worse off (or better off in a way that creates a new problem). No goal, no scene; no disaster, no momentum.
• Sequel — Reaction + Dilemma + Decision. The protagonist processes the disaster emotionally, weighs the bad options the disaster has created, and commits to a new goal that drives the next scene.
• Why it matters. Novels that drag in the middle — the “sagging middle” — almost always have scenes without disasters or sequels without decisions. The scene-sequel cycle is the engine; when it stalls, the chapter stalls.

Dialogue beats vs tag overload

“He said / she said” tags are invisible in moderation and fatiguing in excess. Action beats — physical business interleaved with speech — carry more weight and double as characterisation: She set down the glass. “I never said that.” One beat per two or three lines of dialogue is a working ratio. Creative tags (he averred, she expostulated, he ejaculated) pull the reader out of the scene and should be cut on sight. Names inside dialogue are also rare in real speech — people who already know each other almost never use first names mid-conversation — so most of them should come out too.

Pacing and the genre clock

Each genre carries a structural contract. Cozy mystery: body by the end of chapter 2, no on-page violence, amateur sleuth, light third-person voice. Thriller: stakes set in chapter 1, ticking clock established by the midpoint, escalating set-pieces toward a climax. Romance: the leads meet by chapter 1 (or page 5), commitment beat by roughly 75%, HEA (Happily Ever After) or HFN (Happy For Now) by 95% — both endings are genre-mandatory. Literary: character interiority drives the book and plot serves character rather than the reverse. Knowing the genre clock lets the editor flag pacing against the reader’s actual expectation, not against generic “good fiction” rules that were never the contract.
