What Kindle Publishing Actually Covers
Kindle is not a single platform. It is a family of file formats (KFX, AZW3, KF8, the retired MOBI), a family of devices (the $99 entry Kindle, the 6.8″ Paperwhite, the 7″ Oasis at around $250, the Scribe, plus the Fire tablet line), and a family of apps that put a Kindle library on every iPhone, Android phone, iPad, Mac, and PC. “Kindle publishing” means producing a manuscript that renders correctly on every one of those surfaces — not just the dashboard you upload to.
Technically, Amazon’s back-end (KDP) is what accepts your file and distributes it. Practically, authors searching for “Kindle publishing” care about the reader experience: how the book looks on a Paperwhite at 2 a.m., whether the cover thumbnail is sharp in the store, whether italics and small caps survive the conversion, whether the table of contents jumps to chapters on a Kindle iOS app. Our work is calibrated to those endpoints, not to the upload screen.
Kindle file formats, decoded
- KFX (Kindle Format X) — the current default since 2015. KFX brings Bookerly typography, enhanced hyphenation, ligatures, sharper image rendering, and smaller file sizes than its predecessors. Modern Kindles and recent Kindle apps receive KFX.
- AZW3 / KF8 — the older HTML5/CSS3-based formats. KDP generates them automatically from a clean EPUB3 master and serves them to older Kindle devices that cannot decode KFX.
- MOBI — the legacy Mobipocket-derived format. Amazon retired MOBI for new ebook uploads in August 2022; it still lives on first- and second-generation Kindles in the wild.
- EPUB3 — the source format you (or your formatter) submit. Kindle devices do not read EPUB3 directly; KDP converts it server-side into KFX and AZW3 before delivery.
Beyond ebooks: Kindle Unlimited, Vella, Create
- Kindle Unlimited — the subscription tier where readers pay a flat monthly fee and read at no per-book cost. Authors are paid from the KDP Select Global Fund at roughly $0.004 to $0.005 per page read (KENPC v3.0). The math favors genre fiction with strong page-through; it rarely favors short non-fiction, reference works, or single-sitting reads.
- Kindle Vella — serialized fiction sold in episodes. Readers spend tokens (three tokens unlock one episode), and authors receive 50% of the token spend. The reading model and the audience are distinct from a standard novel; Vella is a parallel product, not a replacement.
- Kindle Create — Amazon’s free desktop formatting tool. It handles linear novels and basic non-fiction adequately. It struggles with illustrated children’s books, cookbooks, complex tables, fixed-layout designs, and custom typography — the moment a book stops being a wall of paragraphs, Create runs out of runway.
Device-specific rendering: where books break
A page that looks elegant on a 7″ Oasis can collapse on a 6″ entry Kindle with a lower-resolution e-ink panel. Image-heavy spreads must be tested on both. Drop caps that display beautifully in the iOS Kindle app frequently revert to plain capital letters on older e-ink hardware that cannot synthesize the glyph. Cover artwork is another silent failure point: Amazon recommends 2,560×1,600 px at a 1.6:1 ratio, and covers submitted at lower resolution show up soft and pixelated in the storefront thumbnail grid where browsing actually happens.
Why Authors Choose Kindle-Native Publishing
- Format coverage that matches the device fleet — we deliver an EPUB3 master that converts cleanly to KFX, AZW3, and KF8, so the book renders correctly whether the reader is on a 2024 Paperwhite or a 2014 entry Kindle.
- Reflowable plus fixed-layout where each fits — novels and prose non-fiction ship reflowable; cookbooks, children’s picture books, and graphic-heavy titles ship fixed-layout, with the choice made on the structure of the manuscript.
- Typography that survives conversion — small caps, italics, em dashes, ellipses, ligatures, and hyphenation are preserved through the EPUB3-to-KFX workflow rather than flattened into ASCII approximations.
- Cover artwork sized for the storefront — covers delivered at 2,560×1,600 px so the thumbnail in the Kindle Store, the lock-screen ad on a Special Offers Kindle, and the “Look Inside” preview all stay sharp.
- KENPC-aware structure for KDP Select titles — for authors enrolling in Kindle Unlimited, the interior is built so the KENPC page count reflects the real reading length and not a deflated count caused by oversized images or excessive whitespace.
Kindle publishing has a few branch paths. The KDP upload step is the validation layer between your file and the store. KDP paperback formatting covers the print companion edition most authors want alongside Kindle. Image-heavy titles need fixed-layout EPUB. For wider distribution beyond Amazon, Apple Books and Kobo cover most non-KDP retail.
Frequently Asked Questions About Kindle Publishing
Is Kindle publishing the same as KDP publishing?
Not quite. KDP is the dashboard and the contractual relationship with Amazon. Kindle publishing is the production work that makes a manuscript render correctly across the Kindle device and app family that KDP distributes to. You need both, but they are different jobs.
Do I have to submit my book in KFX?
No. KDP only accepts EPUB3 (and a handful of other source formats) for new ebook uploads. Amazon’s servers convert your EPUB3 into KFX and AZW3 automatically; KFX is not an input format you generate yourself.
How much does Kindle Unlimited actually pay per page?
Recent monthly KDP Select Global Fund payouts have landed in the range of $0.004 to $0.005 per KENPC page read. A 300-page novel read end-to-end therefore returns roughly $1.20 to $1.50, before the $0.99 to $14.99 list-price royalty on actual purchases.
Will my book look the same on a Paperwhite, a Fire tablet, and the iOS Kindle app?
No, and it should not. E-ink Paperwhites render greyscale at moderate resolution, Fire tablets render full colour at higher resolution, and the iOS app inherits the phone’s display. A correctly built Kindle file adapts to each surface; identical rendering across all three is not the goal and is not achievable.
Can I publish a children’s picture book or cookbook on Kindle?
Yes, in fixed-layout KF8 with embedded images and a defined page geometry. Reflowable EPUB3 is the wrong container for image-anchored content. The fixed-layout build is more involved and the file size is larger, but it is the only way an illustrated title displays correctly on a Kindle.
