What IngramSpark Book Formatting Actually Means
IngramSpark is the print-on-demand and global distribution arm of Ingram Content Group, the largest book wholesaler in the world. When you publish through IngramSpark, your book becomes available to over 40,000 retailers and libraries — including Barnes & Noble, independent bookstores, and academic libraries — through Ingram’s wholesale catalog. KDP, by comparison, sells almost exclusively through Amazon.
That distribution reach is why IngramSpark formatting is held to a higher technical bar than KDP. Bookstores need a file that prints predictably across hundreds of POD locations. Libraries need a file that meets cataloging standards. The IngramSpark file you upload is what every one of those venues prints — you don’t get to fix it later.
The IngramSpark spec, decoded
Every interior file uploaded to IngramSpark must be:
- PDF/X-1a:2001 — a constrained PDF standard that disallows transparencies, layers, and embedded color profiles. It guarantees the file will render the same way on every commercial printer.
- CMYK color — RGB images are silently converted, often with color shift. Convert before export.
- All fonts embedded — IngramSpark rejects files that reference external fonts, including common system fonts.
- 300 DPI minimum for any image, photograph, or chart. Below 300 DPI, IngramSpark may accept the file but the printed result is visibly soft.
- 0.125″ bleed on the three outer edges of every page that contains content extending to the trim. The interior margin (gutter) does not bleed.
- Trim size locked at upload — IngramSpark supports trim sizes from 4.25″ × 6.875″ through 8.5″ × 11″, but you cannot change the trim once production starts.
Get any one of these wrong and the file fails IngramSpark’s automated check, costing you three to five business days while you re-upload.
Spine width math, made painless
The spine width on your cover file depends on three things: page count, paper weight, and paper finish. The formula:
- 50# white or cream paper: page count × 0.0025 inches
- 70# white or cream paper: page count × 0.003 inches
- 80# white gloss or matte paper: page count × 0.0035 inches
A 300-page novel on 50# cream prints with a 0.75″ spine. Switch the same book to 70# white and the spine grows to 0.9″. Get this wrong and your title drifts off the spine — and IngramSpark won’t reprint at their cost.
IngramSpark vs. KDP Print: which one needs which file
KDP Print accepts Word, ePub, and looser PDFs; IngramSpark requires PDF/X-1a or it rejects the upload. KDP applies a 60% royalty against list price; IngramSpark uses a wholesale discount model (default 55%, adjustable down to 30%) so retailers can mark up. KDP gives you Amazon and a thin “Expanded Distribution” channel; IngramSpark gives you the actual bookstore-and-library catalog.
Many self-publishers use both: KDP for the Amazon listing (better royalty there), IngramSpark for everywhere else. That means producing two separate print-ready files — same manuscript, different specs. We format both as a package for $249.
Why Authors Choose IngramSpark
The things IngramSpark does that KDP doesn’t:
- Bookstore distribution through the Ingram wholesale catalog. Independent bookstores and chain stores order from Ingram, not Amazon.
- Library distribution through Baker & Taylor and Ingram Library Services.
- Hardcover and case-laminate options across more trim sizes than KDP supports.
- Returnability — you can opt your title into bookstore returns, which retailers require to stock your book on shelves.
- A real ISBN — Ingram-assigned or your own; they’re treated equally in the catalog.
If your goal is “available on Amazon,” KDP is enough. If your goal includes “in stock at my local bookstore” or “on the library catalog,” you need an IngramSpark-formatted file.
IngramSpark sits in a small ecosystem with its own quirks. Authors comparing their options usually want IngramSpark vs KDP first, then dig into IngramSpark book printing specs. If your interior is Lightning Source-bound, Lightning Source formatting is the same press with different distribution. Hardcover formatting is where most IngramSpark titles end up.
Frequently Asked Questions About IngramSpark Formatting
Do I need to format my book for IngramSpark separately from KDP?
Yes. The two services use different file specs (PDF/X-1a vs. looser PDF), different bleed handling, and different spine-width calculations. A file that passes KDP’s automated check will often fail IngramSpark’s, especially around fonts and color profiles.
How long does IngramSpark formatting take?
For a standard novel under 80,000 words, two business days. Complex layouts — textbooks, illustrated children’s books, image-heavy non-fiction — take three to five days because of the per-page typesetting work.
Can I upload a Word document to IngramSpark?
No. IngramSpark only accepts PDF for the interior. The cover requires a separate PDF/X-1a file built to your exact spine-width math.
What trim size should I pick?
For trade fiction, 5.5″ × 8.5″ (digest) or 6″ × 9″ (royal) is standard. 5″ × 8″ is acceptable but feels small. For non-fiction or workbooks, 7″ × 10″ or 8.5″ × 11″ works well. Once production starts the trim is locked — pick before formatting begins, not after.
Will my IngramSpark book show up on Amazon?
Yes, but at a thinner royalty. If you publish on both KDP and IngramSpark, KDP wins the Amazon listing (better royalty for you). IngramSpark’s distribution is what gets you into Barnes & Noble, independents, and libraries.
