What eBook Publishing Actually Means
Multi-platform ebook publishing means listing one finished manuscript for sale across every major retailer that matters — Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble Nook, Google Play Books, and the library/subscription channels (OverDrive, Scribd, Bibliotheca) that sit behind aggregator dashboards. It is the distribution layer of self-publishing: the file is finished, the cover is locked, and the question becomes which storefronts hold your metadata, who collects the royalty, and whose ISBN is on the copyright page.
This is not the same as “publishing on Amazon.” A KDP-only release captures roughly 70–80% of US ebook revenue but forfeits the rest, and it locks the title into Kindle Unlimited exclusivity if you opt into KDP Select. Multi-platform publishing trades the KU borrow income for catalogue presence on five storefronts, audiobook-adjacent discovery on Apple, and the international markets where Kobo and Google Play outsell Amazon (Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, parts of Latin America). The mechanics below are what changes when you publish wide.
Aggregator vs direct upload: the real tradeoff
- Draft2Digital takes 10% of the retailer’s net (so ~6.5% off a $4.99 list price at 70% royalty) and pushes to Apple, Kobo, Nook, Google Play, Tolino, Scribd, and OverDrive from one EPUB upload.
- PublishDrive runs a flat-fee model (subscription tiers from roughly $12–$99/month) instead of a royalty cut — cheaper at scale, expensive for a single title.
- Smashwords (now merged with Draft2Digital) keeps the Smashwords store and library channels active with a similar 10% take.
- Direct upload always wins on Amazon. KDP pays 70% on $2.99–$9.99 titles and no aggregator can route there. Kobo Writing Life and Apple Books Connect are also worth the direct route — both dashboards are clean, both pay 70%, and going direct lets you run Kobo Promotions and Apple price-pulse merchandising that aggregators block.
- Google Play Books Partner Center is invitation-only in many regions, which is the single strongest argument for keeping an aggregator in the stack even when you upload directly elsewhere.
The ISBN question, decoded
One ISBN identifies one format of one edition. The EPUB needs its own ISBN; the Kindle file needs a different one (or none, if you accept Amazon’s ASIN); a paperback needs a third. Amazon will assign a free ISBN, but it lists Amazon as the publisher of record and cannot be reused on Apple or Kobo. Aggregator-supplied ISBNs from Draft2Digital or PublishDrive are free and portable across stores, but the aggregator is named as publisher in Bowker’s Books In Print database — which matters for libraries, review submissions, and any author who wants their imprint on the metadata. Buying direct from Bowker in the US costs $125 for one ISBN or $295 for ten; in Canada and most of Europe the national library issues them at no cost. Owning the ISBN is the only way the publisher field reads as your imprint on every storefront.
File spec checklist for cross-store distribution
The master file is EPUB3 reflowable, validated against EPUBCheck 5.x with zero errors. Amazon converts EPUB3 to KFX on ingestion. Apple Books reads EPUB3 natively but rejects external font references — every typeface must be embedded in the OPF manifest or stripped out. Kobo silently removes most custom CSS at render time, so layouts that depend on margins, drop-caps, or fixed line-heights need fallback styling. Google Play Books is the strictest on image quality: embedded images below 300 DPI trigger an “image quality” warning that suppresses the title from search until corrected. Barnes & Noble Press accepts EPUB2 and EPUB3 but flags any file over 20 MB for manual review. One file rarely passes all five validators on the first build — the production work is in the per-store conditional CSS and the asset re-export, not the writing.
Why Authors Choose Multi-Platform eBook Publishing
- Reach beyond Amazon. Roughly 20–30% of US ebook revenue happens off-Amazon (Apple, Kobo, Google, Nook combined), and the share is higher in Canada, Australia, and the EU.
- No exclusivity lock. Going wide forfeits Kindle Unlimited borrow income but keeps the title eligible for Kobo Plus, Apple’s editorial features, and library ebook lending through OverDrive.
- Pre-order windows on every store. Apple supports 12-month pre-orders, Kobo supports 12 months, Amazon caps at 90 days — staggering launch dates across stores extends the new-release algorithm boost.
- Price-promotion flexibility. Kobo runs daily/weekly promo submissions, Apple curates by category, BookBub International features hit the non-Amazon stores hardest. None of these levers exist inside a KDP-only catalogue.
- Ownership of the metadata. With your own ISBN and direct dashboards, the title record, categories, keywords, and price are editable in hours rather than queued behind an aggregator’s support ticket.
- Library and subscription revenue. Draft2Digital’s OverDrive channel and PublishDrive’s Bibliotheca feed reach institutional buyers that no direct retailer dashboard touches.
Beyond Amazon, the eBook retailers worth setting up directly are Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble Press, and Lulu. Draft2Digital aggregates many of the smaller stores in one upload if you don’t want to manage each account separately.
Frequently Asked Questions About eBook Publishing
Should I go direct on every store or use an aggregator?
Direct on Amazon, Apple, and Kobo — those three account for the vast majority of wide revenue and the dashboards pay you on a 30-day cycle at full retailer royalty. Use an aggregator (Draft2Digital is the default choice) for Google Play, Nook, and the library/subscription channels where direct access is either invitation-only or operationally clunky.
Do I lose money by giving up Kindle Unlimited?
For fiction in romance, fantasy, and thriller categories, KU page-read income often exceeds wide retail royalties for the first year. For non-fiction, literary fiction, and any title with strong international appeal, wide distribution typically out-earns KU within 6–12 months. The decision is genre-specific, not universal.
Whose ISBN ends up on my copyright page if I use Draft2Digital?
Draft2Digital is listed as the publisher of record in the Bowker Books In Print database when you accept their free ISBN. The book still belongs to you, but library catalogues, Goodreads metadata, and review databases will show Draft2Digital as publisher. Buying your own Bowker ISBN ($125 single, $295 for 10) is the only way your imprint name appears in those records.
How long does it take for a title to go live across all five stores?
Amazon publishes within 24–72 hours of upload. Apple Books takes 24–48 hours. Kobo is usually live within 24 hours. Aggregator-routed stores (Google Play, Nook, library channels) take 3–7 days because the aggregator queues the file before each retailer ingests it. Plan a 10-day buffer between final file delivery and announced launch date.
Can I change my distribution strategy after launch — KDP-exclusive to wide, or wide to exclusive?
Yes, in either direction. Leaving KDP Select requires waiting out the 90-day enrolment cycle and then uploading to the other stores. Going from wide to KDP-exclusive requires unpublishing from every non-Amazon retailer and confirming removal before enrolling. Both transitions take 2–4 weeks of catalogue cleanup, and the ASIN/ISBN reviews stay attached to the title across the move.
