What Children’s Book Formatting Actually Covers

Children’s book formatting turns a manuscript and illustrations into a print interior and ebook file matched to one of three age-bracket categories — picture book, early-reader, or middle-grade chapter book. Each has its own page-count math, type sizing, illustration cadence, and trim-size convention, and the wrong choice on any lever produces a book that looks amateurish next to traditionally published peers on the same shelf.

The Three Layout Categories

Picture books target ages 3–7, run 32 pages, allow full-bleed illustrations, and use display type at 18–24pt so the page reads at arm’s length during read-aloud. Early-reader and leveled-reader titles target ages 5–8 with vocabulary in the Lexile 200L–500L band typical of grades 1–2, body type at 14–16pt with 18–22pt leading, and an illustration every one or two pages. Middle-grade chapter books target ages 8–12 with body type at 12–14pt, denser text, illustrations reduced to chapter headers or spot art, and chapters running 1,500–3,000 words. Print Versus Ebook (Fixed-Layout Versus Reflowable)

Picture books go to print as hardcover where possible — parents prefer hardcover for read-aloud durability — and to ebook as fixed-layout EPUB3, which preserves illustration positioning exactly as designed. Reflowable EPUB cannot lock an illustration to its facing-page text and is the wrong format for a picture book. Middle-grade chapter books ship as paperback plus reflowable EPUB, where text wraps to whatever font size the reader picks. Early-reader titles sit between: reflowable when illustrations are inline, fixed-layout when each spread is tightly composed.
