What Cambridge Formatting Actually Covers

Cambridge University Press (CUP) maintains one of the most recognisable house styles in academic publishing, and manuscripts submitted through the CUP Author Hub are expected to align with template-level precision before they reach copy-editing. Cambridge Formatting prepares your manuscript to the trim sizes CUP routinely uses for monographs and textbooks — Royal at 156×234 mm and Demy at 138×216 mm — with the page geometry calibrated to the golden-ratio canon that CUP designers have applied to scholarly books for decades. The result is a typeset block that sits correctly on the page, leaves room for running heads and folios, and reads cleanly in both casebound and paperback editions.

Beyond the page furniture, the work covers serif body typography (typically Adobe Garamond or a CUP custom serif), citation styling, equation typesetting, table and figure handling, and back-matter indexing. Whether the title is heading for a Cambridge Open Access print-and-digital release or a traditional monograph run, the same internal grammar applies: consistent hierarchy, predictable spacing, and structure that survives both the printed page and the digital reflow that CUP delivers alongside it.

House Style Typography

Body text is set in a serif face — Adobe Garamond is the long-standing reference, although CUP series sometimes use a custom serif drawn for the press. Citations follow the book’s chosen scheme: superscript footnote numbers in the running text with notes set at the foot of the page, or Chicago author-date in-text references paired with a hanging-indent bibliography. Reference lists alphabetise by author surname, hang the second and subsequent lines, and use en-dashes for page ranges and date spans. Whether your book uses notes-and-bibliography or author-date is a per-title editorial decision, and the formatting follows that choice consistently from chapter one through the back matter.

Equations, Figures and Index

Equations are typeset from MathML or LaTeX source — either through InDesign with MathTools for design-led titles, or LaTeX-to-PDF directly for STEM-heavy monographs where the equation density makes a TeX workflow more efficient. Tables follow the CUP rule-only convention: horizontal rules at the top, beneath the column heads, and at the foot, with no shading or vertical rules, and captions set above the table. Figures take captions below, numbered per chapter (Figure 3.2, Figure 3.3) rather than running through the whole book. The index is set alphabetically with subentries indented under their main heading, page ranges joined by en-dashes, and cross-references styled as see and see also per CUP convention.

Why Authors Choose Cambridge Formatting

  • Trim sizes match CUP’s Royal and Demy standards out of the file, so production doesn’t reset the page geometry.
  • Citation typesetting handles either notes-bibliography or author-date without re-keying references between styles.
  • Equation source travels as MathML or LaTeX, keeping mathematical content editable rather than flattened to images.
  • Tables and figures follow CUP’s rule-only and per-chapter numbering conventions from the first draft onward.
  • The Author Hub template structure is respected, so files load cleanly into the CUP production workflow.

FAQ

Which trim size should I choose, Royal or Demy?
Royal (156×234 mm) is the default for most CUP monographs and textbooks because it accommodates longer line lengths and complex tables. Demy (138×216 mm) suits shorter literary or humanities titles where a more compact page feels appropriate. Your CUP commissioning editor usually specifies which the series uses.

Do I need to deliver in InDesign or can LaTeX go straight through?
Both routes are valid. InDesign with MathTools is common for design-led titles and books with rich figures; LaTeX-to-PDF direct is standard for mathematics, physics, and computer-science monographs. The format is matched to the book’s content density rather than imposed by default.

How are footnotes and bibliography styled?
Footnotes use superscript numbers in the body text and sit at the foot of each page. Bibliographies use a hanging indent so author surnames stand proud of the runover lines. If your book uses Chicago author-date instead, the same hanging-indent rule applies to the reference list.

Can the same files produce both print and Open Access digital editions?
Yes — Cambridge Open Access titles ship in both print and digital, and the typeset source is structured so the digital edition can be derived without re-flowing the entire book. Equation source as MathML or LaTeX is particularly important here because it survives the conversion.

Does Cambridge Formatting include the index?
Index typesetting is included: alphabetical ordering, indented subentries, en-dashed page ranges, and CUP cross-reference conventions. Index compilation — deciding which terms appear — is normally the author’s responsibility or handled by a professional indexer, then formatted to CUP house style as part of the typesetting pass.
