What Barnes & Noble Formatting Actually Covers

Barnes & Noble Formatting prepares your manuscript for B&N Press, the retailer’s self-publishing platform that replaced Nook Press in 2018. The deliverable is a reflowable EPUB3 file built to render natively on the Nook reader app and Nook devices, plus a print-ready interior PDF if you want a paperback edition listed alongside the digital version. Unlike Amazon, which converts uploads into its proprietary KFX format, B&N’s reading engine is EPUB3-native — the file you submit is closer to what readers actually see, which means font embedding, RGB cover handling, and CSS styling behave more predictably.

Nook EPUB3 Specification

B&N Press accepts EPUB3 with embedded fonts, RGB color images, and reflowable text. Their reader engine respects accessibility tags, so we mark up headings semantically, supply alt text for every image, and declare language attributes for foreign-language passages. Cover images are submitted separately at 1400 pixels minimum on the shortest side. Because the engine doesn’t transcode the file the way KFX does, typography choices you make at the source survive to the reader — which is good for design control and unforgiving of sloppy CSS.

B&N Press Print and How It Compares to KDP

B&N Press paperback supports trim sizes from 5″x8″ through 8.5″x11″, with a 65% royalty on list price minus per-copy print cost. Hardcover was added relatively recently and has a narrower trim selection. Compared to KDP, the submission review is more conservative: content moderation is stricter and turnaround on first review can be slower. Royalty on ebooks is 70% in the $2.99 to $9.99 band for US and UK markets, 40% otherwise. The market share is smaller — roughly 7 to 10% of US ebook sales — but Nook readers tend to buy more books per year than the platform’s footprint suggests.
