What Amazon Self-Publishing Actually Means

Amazon self-publishing is shorthand for using Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) to release a book without a traditional publisher acting as middleman. You retain rights, set your own price, choose your own categories and keywords, and Amazon handles distribution, fulfilment, and royalty payment. There’s no acquisition gate — if your file passes KDP’s automated check, your book goes live.

That access has a cost. You also retain every responsibility a publisher would otherwise absorb: editing, formatting, cover design, ISBN management, metadata, marketing, and the technical compliance KDP enforces at upload. Most authors who self-publish successfully treat those responsibilities as services to outsource, not skills to learn from scratch.

Royalty tiers, simplified

• 70% ebook royalty — available for ebooks priced $2.99 to $9.99, in selected territories. Amazon deducts a delivery fee per download based on file size (typically $0.05–$0.15 per copy).
• 35% ebook royalty — the fallback rate outside the 70% price range or in unselected territories. No delivery fee.
• 60% paperback royalty — calculated on list price minus printing cost. Amazon prints each copy on demand, so the printing cost is deducted before your share.
• 40% expanded distribution — for paperbacks sold through Amazon’s wholesale catalog to non-Amazon retailers.

KDP Select: the exclusivity tradeoff

Enrolling your ebook in KDP Select gives you four perks: Kindle Unlimited (KU) reads, Kindle Countdown Deals, free promotional days, and stronger algorithmic placement. The price is 90 days of Amazon-exclusive ebook distribution. KU pays per page read — usually $0.004–$0.005 per page — which works for genre fiction with strong page-through rates and rarely works for non-fiction or short books. Print is unaffected: you can still publish paperback or hardcover anywhere.

ISBN ownership: yours, theirs, or both

KDP will assign you a free Amazon-only ISBN, which is a fast path but a permanent constraint — an Amazon-assigned ISBN cannot be used to publish the same book elsewhere later. If you ever plan to add IngramSpark for bookstore reach, buy your own ISBN from Bowker (US) or your country’s registrar before publishing. One ISBN per format: ebook, paperback, and hardcover each need their own number.

Do I need an ISBN to self-publish on Amazon?
No. KDP will assign a free Amazon-specific ISBN if you don’t supply your own. The Amazon-assigned ISBN works only on Amazon. If you want bookstore distribution alongside Amazon, buy your own ISBN from Bowker (US) or your country’s registrar.

What’s the difference between the 35% and 70% royalty options?
70% royalty applies to ebooks priced $2.99-$9.99 sold to readers in major markets (US, UK, EU, Japan, etc.). Outside that price range or those markets, you fall back to 35%. Amazon also subtracts a delivery fee from the 70% tier based on file size, which can take 5-15 cents off each sale.

Does KDP Select lock me into Amazon exclusively?
Yes. KDP Select gives you Kindle Unlimited reads, Kindle Countdown Deals, and Free Promotions in exchange for 90 days of Amazon-exclusive ebook distribution. You can still publish print on other platforms during that window — only the digital edition is locked.

How long does it take to publish a book on Amazon?
From a finished, formatted manuscript: 2-3 business days for KDP review, plus 24 hours for the listing to populate. From an unformatted Word draft: add 2-5 business days for our formatting work depending on complexity.

Can I update my book after it’s published?
Yes. Both interior and cover files can be replaced at any time through KDP. Existing customers keep the version they bought; new buyers get the updated file. Major updates that change the book substantively should also bump the edition number.
