What Amazon Editing Actually Covers
Manuscript editing fixes the 70,000 words inside the book — the prose, the pacing, the dialogue, the consistency. That work is covered under book editing, and it happens before the file ever reaches KDP. Amazon editing is a separate discipline. It targets the listing surface: the description, the A+ Content blocks, the Look Inside sample, and the keyword integration that decides whether a shopper scrolling Amazon at 11pm clicks “Buy” or swipes to the next title.
The two categories require different skills. Manuscript editing is craft work on a long-form narrative. Amazon editing is short-form sales copy bound by character limits, HTML rules, and algorithmic relevance. A line editor who polished your novel will not, by default, write a 4,000-character description that converts. Amazon editing covers four distinct writing problems — description, A+ Content, opening pages, and keyword integration — and each one obeys its own rules.
The book description: a 4,000-character pitch
Amazon allows up to 4,000 characters of HTML-formatted description on the product page. Most authors write a generic back-cover blurb and waste the space. An effective description opens with a hook inside the first 200 characters, because that is the slice Amazon shows in mobile search before the “read more” truncation. The body runs 2-3 short paragraphs of plot or premise, never a wall of text. A “what readers say” social-proof line lifts a quote from an early review. Tight bullet points then list genre, themes, comparable titles, and reading order if the book sits in a series. Bold, italics, line breaks, and basic HTML lists are allowed inside the description field; tables, scripts, and images are not.
A+ Content: the modular marketing blocks
- Standard module — image plus text block, no per-block character limit beyond the module template. Use it for premise visualization, character introductions, and a comparable-titles grid that positions the book inside its niche.
- Comparison chart — up to 6 columns, designed to rank your book against competing titles on the dimensions readers actually weigh: tone, length, heat level, age range, series status.
- Author bio module — this is not the same copy that lives on your Amazon Author Page. The A+ bio block sits inside the listing and is read by shoppers actively considering the purchase, so it converts rather than introduces.
- Image carousel — the right module for series authors, showing every book in the universe so a reader who loved book one can see exactly where the story continues.
The Look Inside conversion problem
Amazon’s Look Inside feature shows the first ~10% of the book free. For a 70,000-word novel, that is roughly 7,000 words — typically all of chapter 1, all of chapter 2, and the opening pages of chapter 3. This is the second sales pitch. The description sells the concept; the Look Inside sells the prose. If chapter 1 opens slowly, if the inciting incident sits in chapter 4, if the front matter eats the preview window, the buyer closes the tab. Amazon editing on the Look Inside means tightening the first 500 words to land the voice immediately, ensuring the inciting incident arrives inside the visible window, and trimming front matter — long acknowledgments, multi-page copyright notices, extended dedications — that pads the 10% with material no shopper wants to read.
Keyword integration without stuffing
KDP gives you 7 keyword slots in the back end. Those same keywords need to appear naturally in the visible description, because Amazon’s algorithm reads description text for relevance signals. Stuffing reads like “this cozy mystery with a cat protagonist set in small-town New England” — obvious, mechanical, and off-putting to the human reader the description is supposed to convert. Real integration weaves keywords into actual sentences: “Detective Sarah Chen returns to the small Vermont town where she grew up, only to find her grandmother’s bookshop — and her grandmother — mixed up in a murder.” Same keywords, same algorithmic weight, prose a shopper will actually finish reading.
Why Authors Choose Amazon-Specific Editing
- The listing is the conversion point — the manuscript can be flawless, but if the description and Look Inside do not sell, the manuscript never gets read.
- Character limits force discipline — 4,000 characters of description and a fixed A+ template require sales-copy compression that long-form editors are not trained for.
- Keyword integration is technical writing — placing 7 KDP keywords into prose without stuffing requires knowing which slots Amazon’s algorithm actually weights.
- A+ Content modules have rules — comparison charts cap at 6 columns, image dimensions are fixed, and module choice signals genre to the algorithm.
- Look Inside optimization recovers lost sales — trimming front matter and tightening chapter 1 changes the percentage of preview readers who scroll to the buy button.
Editors specialize by genre — fiction, children’s books, short stories, and publishing-track editing. Match the editor to the category; copy decisions move faster when the editor already knows what KDP and Amazon’s category buyers expect.
Frequently Asked Questions About Amazon Editing
Is Amazon editing the same as book editing?
No. Book editing works on the manuscript — the 70,000 words inside the file. Amazon editing works on the listing surface: description, A+ Content, Look Inside opening pages, and keyword integration. Most authors need both, in that order.
How long can the Amazon book description be?
The description field accepts up to 4,000 characters of HTML-formatted text. Bold, italics, line breaks, and unordered lists are supported. Tables, images, and scripts are not.
What is A+ Content and who can use it?
A+ Content is a set of modular marketing blocks — standard image-plus-text, comparison chart up to 6 columns, author bio, image carousel — that appear on the listing below the description. KDP authors enrolled in the standard publishing program can add A+ Content to their titles at no cost.
How much of my book does Look Inside show?
Approximately 10% of the file, measured from the first page forward. For a 70,000-word novel that works out to around 7,000 words. Long front matter eats into that allowance, which is why Amazon editing tightens copyright pages, dedications, and acknowledgments before the chapter 1 opening.
Will keyword integration affect how my book reads?
Done correctly, no. Keywords are woven into natural sentences that describe plot, setting, and character — the same sentences a reader expects in any well-written description. Stuffing is what reads badly; integration is invisible.
