Publishing a book used to be an expensive and time-consuming process. But with the advent of digital publishing, authors now have the ability to self-publish their books with ease. One of the most popular ways to do this is through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) program, which allows authors to upload their work directly to Amazon and make it available for sale in over 180 countries.

Let’s take a closer look at how you can get your book published on Amazon. Once your book is formatted correctly, it’s time to upload it onto Amazon KDP! You’ll need some basic details about your book such as its title, author name(s), description, cover image, etc., but once that’s done you’re almost ready!

What Amazon Book Publishing Actually Includes

“Amazon book publishing” is the umbrella term for getting a book live across Amazon’s three publishing platforms: KDP for ebooks and print, Kindle Vella for serialized fiction, and ACX for audiobooks. They share an account but are separate products with separate file specs, separate metadata, and separate royalty structures. Choosing the right platform for your book matters as much as the file you upload.

The three Amazon platforms, decoded

  • KDP — ebooks for Kindle, Fire tablets, and the Kindle apps. Free to publish, 35% or 70% royalty depending on price and territory.
  • KDP Print — paperback and hardcover via Amazon’s print-on-demand network. Same dashboard as KDP. 60% royalty on list price minus per-copy print cost.
  • Kindle Vella — episode-by-episode serialized stories paid by reader tokens. A different format with different reader expectations — not a substitute for a full novel.
  • ACX — audiobooks distributed to Audible, Amazon, and iTunes. Royalty depends on exclusivity (40% non-exclusive, 50% exclusive Audible).

Decision tree by book type

Trade fiction and non-fiction novels: KDP plus KDP Print as a standard pairing. Hardcover optional for prestige genres (literary, business, memoir). Children’s picture books: KDP Print only, with Fixed-Layout EPUB for the digital edition (different file spec from regular ebooks). Photography and art books: KDP Print is acceptable for paperback; IngramSpark for hardcover with better paper stock. Cookbook with recipes that need exact layout: Fixed-Layout ebook, KDP Print paperback.

Print spec essentials

KDP Print accepts PDF, Word, and DOCX for paperbacks. Trim sizes range from 5″ × 8″ to 8.5″ × 11″; the popular trade-fiction size is 6″ × 9″. Bleed is 0.125″ if your interior contains content extending to the edge of the page. Cover files require a single PDF that wraps front cover, spine, and back cover — the spine width depends on page count and paper stock, and Amazon provides a Cover Template Generator that calculates the dimensions for you.

Why Authors Choose Amazon Book Publishing

  • Reach. Amazon controls roughly 60% of US book sales and over 80% of ebook sales. No other single platform comes close.
  • Bundled formats. One dashboard manages ebook, paperback, and hardcover; one listing displays all three to readers.
  • Promotional surface. KDP Select unlocks Kindle Countdown Deals, Free Promotions, and Kindle Unlimited reads — mechanisms unavailable through any other publisher.
  • Direct dashboard data. KDP Reports updates within 24 hours of every sale, with breakdowns by territory, format, and date.

Amazon publishing has format-specific tracks. Print runs through KDP paperback formatting; Kindle through the KDP upload step; image-heavy titles through fixed-layout EPUB. If you also want distribution beyond Amazon, Apple Books and Kobo cover most non-KDP retail.

Frequently Asked Questions About Amazon Book Publishing

KDP, KDP Print, Kindle Vella — which one do I want?
KDP for ebooks. KDP Print for paperbacks and hardcovers (it’s bundled into the same dashboard). Kindle Vella for serialized fiction (chapter-by-chapter releases). Most full-length books just need KDP and KDP Print; Vella is a separate market.

Should I publish ebook and paperback together?
Yes, they share a listing and reinforce each other. Amazon links them automatically as alternate formats, so paperback browsers see the ebook and ebook readers see the paperback. Hardcover, when added, links to both.

Can I publish on Amazon without exclusivity?
Yes. KDP Select (90-day exclusive) is opt-in. You can publish on KDP non-exclusively and also distribute to Kobo, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, and IngramSpark in parallel. The tradeoff is you forfeit Kindle Unlimited reads.

How does Amazon set the print price floor?
Amazon’s POD print cost depends on page count, trim size, and color (black-and-white vs full-color interior). The list price must exceed the print cost plus a 60% margin. A 250-page B&W trade paperback prints for ~$3.65, so the price floor is roughly $9.13.

What goes wrong most often when authors self-publish on Amazon?
Three things, in order of frequency: cover doesn’t match Amazon’s exact spine-width math, interior PDF has missing fonts or RGB images, and the metadata (categories, keywords) is set generic instead of niche-specific. The first two block publishing; the third silently buries you in search.
