What Book Interior Design Actually Covers
Book interior design is the craft of arranging text and images within the page block so that a reader can move through hundreds of pages without friction. It sits one layer above typesetting, which is concerned purely with type — kerning, leading, hyphenation, justification — and it is broader than formatting, which covers the table of contents, heading hierarchy, and structural metadata that an ebook reader or print engine needs to parse. Interior design is the layer where type, image, white space, and pagination are composed together into a coherent reading experience.
The decisions made at this layer are largely invisible when they are correct. A reader rarely notices that chapter openings always fall on a recto page, that folios disappear on display spreads, or that the gutter has been widened to compensate for perfect binding. They notice only that the book feels calm and authoritative. That feeling is the product of dozens of micro-choices about geometry, typography, and the staging of front and back matter.
Page Geometry and the Margin Canons
Trim size is the first decision — 5 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5, and 6 x 9 inches each carry different reading rhythms and shelf presence. Once trim is fixed, margins are set using one of the historical canons: the golden-ratio canon, the Van de Graaf canon, or the Tschichold secret canon, each of which produces a text block whose proportions echo the page itself. Tschichold’s canon, derived from medieval manuscripts, places the inner margin at half the outer and the top at half the bottom. The gutter is then padded further as a binding allowance — perfect-bound paperbacks lose more inner margin than sewn hardcovers. Header and footer placement follow: running heads carry author and title on facing pages, or the design strips back to folio-only for a quieter page. Master pages enforce consistency — chapter openers begin recto, drop the folio, and may carry an ornament or rule above the first line of text.
Front Matter and Back Matter Design
Front matter is staged in a fixed order: half-title, optional frontispiece, title page, copyright, dedication, table of contents, foreword, preface, and introduction. Each element has its own pagination convention — copyright is verso, dedication is recto and often unpaginated, the ToC may use roman numerals. Back matter mirrors this discipline with appendix, notes, glossary, index, about-the-author, and an also-by list. Typography pairing runs through all of it: a serif body face such as Garamond, Caslon, or Sabon for sustained reading, paired with a sans-serif chapter heading in Avenir, Optima, or Frutiger for contrast at scale. Image placement is governed by a house style — full-page plates on recto, inline figures sized to the text block, captions in a smaller weight of the body face.
Why Authors Choose Professional Interior Design
- Margin canons and gutter allowances are calculated for the chosen trim and binding method, so text never disappears into the spine.
- Master pages keep chapter openers, running heads, and folios consistent across every section of the book.
- Body and display typefaces are paired for long-form readability rather than picked for visual novelty.
- Front matter and back matter follow the conventions readers expect, which signals a serious publication.
- Image and caption treatment is unified across the manuscript instead of varying chapter by chapter.
FAQ
How is interior design different from typesetting?
Typesetting handles the type itself — spacing, hyphenation, justification. Interior design is the wider layer that arranges type, images, margins, and pagination into a unified page system.
Which margin canon is best for a novel?
Tschichold’s canon and the Van de Graaf construction both produce balanced text blocks suited to fiction. The choice depends on trim size and how generous the outer margin should feel.
Do chapter openings have to start on a recto page?
It is the dominant convention in trade publishing because the recto carries more visual weight. Some designs allow verso openings to save signature pages, but recto-only is the safer default.
What typeface pairing works for non-fiction?
A serif body such as Sabon or Caslon paired with a humanist sans-serif like Optima or Frutiger for chapter headings gives contrast without clashing. Garamond pairs cleanly with Avenir.
How much extra gutter does perfect binding need?
Perfect-bound paperbacks typically need an extra 0.125 to 0.25 inches added to the inner margin compared with sewn hardcovers, because the spine does not lie fully flat when opened.
